Carabus auratus > Carabus auronitens

Post by AndrewC »

Posted more for ID confirmation rather than technical prowess ...

I was out looking for fungi and my kids discovered this jewel hidden under some bark.

Body length about 15mm, Nikon 200f4, natural light.

I'm pretty sure it is a Carabus auratus but my IDs are usually way off. I teased it out of it's hole for one shot before it skedaddled and we replaced it's bark roof and left it in peace for the winter.

Nice looking beetle. :D I saw one similar today but as usual, with my luck, it flew off before I had the chance to raise the camera. :(

Hey Andrew, beautiful colours on this guy. Could it be one of those jewel beetles?

Cheers

Looks like a pretty good match - certainly matches the pictures at

.. though there seems to be some variation in the head colour.
