Entomophthora fungus revisited

Post by beetleman »

Following Kens post of his flies infected with this fungus, I am posting my flies. All pictures taken in my garden this year. The first and second picture are of the same fly and were taken about 24 hours apart and the third was another fly. I could not do more of a followup on the first fly because the heavy rain we received the next day washed it off the plant. Thanks again to betty for the ID of the fungus.

I have never noticed this fungi on any of the flies around my house here Doug. From what I read, it has to be fairly cool for the fungus to propagate itself. Living down south here, I probably won't find any till fall, if then. The link that I posted to in my thread, says that some flies can survive the fungi, by moving to areas where the temperature deters fungal growth. Great shots there Doug :D , I am going to have to keep an eye out for more of these fungi during my mountain hikes.
