Peruvian Amazon: Manu Part III
Tschudi's false coral snake (Oxyrhopus melanogenys):
The pale tail waves back and forth in a behaviour known as caudal luring. It is meant to emulate a worm, or insect and thereby attract potential prey, like anolis lizards or frogs. Two-striped forest viper (Bothrops bilineata):
Fer-de-lance (Bothrops atrox):
In the frenzy of a mating pond, there can arrive some confusion with pairings. Here a female fringe-lipped tree frog (Sinax garbei) was mistakenly grabbed by a male Dendropsophus sp., [though they don't seem particularly concerned about the mix up]:
Grasshopper with entomopathogenic fungus - (Ophiocordyceps locustiphila):
One of the more venomous spiders from South America, the wandering spider (Phoneutria ferox) has an impressive threat display:
Just an ant - Camponotus serveicentris:
Thanks for looking and commenting,
Paul

That Coral snake is absolutely beautiful and that spider has a lot of attitude, I like that. Though spiders, except for a scant few, give me the creeps big time. Cordyceps on the other hand fascinates me to no end. It even showed up on an episode of the old X Files TV series where it infected a few folks.

Real nice - beautiful lighting

The snake photos are exceptional!
I hate those wandering spiders. They love to sneak into cabins and tents (and suitcases), and they are very aggressive. I've had many near-misses with them. And they are BIG.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.
Lou - I'm with you on that, my friend was bitten by one which was tucked into a shower curtain. I tend to get more scorpions than Phoneutrias in my stuff, but I'm always on the lookout for whatever has crawled into my bags or boots.

I had seen a very large one at night on my wall, and tried to deal with it but it escaped, near my "suitcase" of stuff. In the morning I figured that with my luck, it was hiding in the suitcase. I carefully removed every large item, and still no spider. I figured I had just been paranoid, there was nothing to worry about. Then I reached for the last little thing in the suitcase, and there was the ##### spider hiding underneath it ready to attack. I threw a shoe at it but it still managed to run off....

Gorgeous images. Can you let me know where macro photography of highly poisonous snakes and spiders ranks in a spectrum from sitting in a rocking chair to skydiving without a parachute?

These are all fantastic shots, but that red snake, WoW !
Re: Peruvian Amazon: Manu Part III
Great work, really fantastic lighting!!!
And you're a braver person than me, I'd never get close enough to a wandering spider to take a photo, not even with a 1200mm lens +2x TC hehe
