Eastern Bluebirds

Post by JayMcClellan »

I attached a Raynox 250 diopter to a GoPro Hero 10 and mounted it inside our bluebird feeder. This is cropped slightly from a still frame of a 4k video, sharpened a little, then reduced to 1024px for upload.

I just saw Rik's new FAQ about the YouTube tag (thanks Rik!) so I thought I'd try it out. This is a short compilation of clips from my macro feeder-cam:

Well, that was prompt! (I speak of using the youtube tag.)

The birds appear to be eating mealworms that don't move. What's the story there? Are the mealworms cold, dead, dry...?

We buy dried mealworms in bulk on Amazon, and with the subscribe-and-save discount this is the cheapest per pound that we've found them: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AR8UGZI

We go through a few bags per year, which is a bit spendy but in return we get to watch bluebirds 12 inches from our dining room window. The birds don't seem to mind that they're dead. In fact when we first started trying to attract the bluebirds we bought some live mealworms, but they're much more expensive and they don't move in the cold anyway.
