Black saddlebags dragonfly

Post by MarkSturtevant »

"Saddlebags" dragonflies are so-named because the dark markings on the wings that can remind one of saddlebags. Perhaps it is because of their extra broad wings, but they have an effortless manner of flying, and they are dragonflies that seem to seldom land. Although common, I had been frustrated for years trying to get photographs. But here is our local species (at last!), the black saddlebags, Tramea lacerata. Its worth a moment to click on the picture, and then click again to "embiggen" it to full screen. They are handsome as heck.

That's a lovely image of a lovely creature!

I do not recognize the mesh structure that the dragonfly is sitting on. Do you know what kind of plant that is?

Wow - really nice! Must be very satisfying to get a hard-won photo like that.
