I have not heard of that common name for this spider. A common common name is black and yellow argiope. https://bugguide.net/node/view/2025.

I have always heard them commonly referred to as "writing spiders" or "Argiope's." I was bitten by a tropical banana spider, I guess one might say, while living in the Philippine Islands. I still bear the scar of the encounter on my thigh today. The Flight Surgeon who attended me knew almost immediately what the excruciatingly painful bite was and said that it must have crawled into bed with me sometime during the night, which left me quite puzzled and apprehensive about going to bed again that night. The ones in the islands are quite large you see. I was given a prescription for antibiotics, Eythromycin, a pat on the head, a scratch behind the ear and was told to return to work that same day. :|

Argiopes are really wonderful spiders. I never feel like my garden is successful any year I don't have one.

They are quite colorful and can get pretty good sized, although they are just as creepy. Lucky for us they are non-venomous. The males are quite small however and not near as creepy or seldom seen, at least by me anyways. I like Jumping spiders much better and I'm more comfortable around them. So much so that I oftentimes play with them. :)
