Honey Bee in flight at 1x

Honey Bee Flight by Aves Lux, on Flickr

An image I've been trying for over the last few seasons a honey bee aloft just leaving a Geranium Rozanne flower which provide the backdrop for the shot.

Taken with Canon R5 and the Canon MP-E65mm at 1x and a diffused Canon MT-26EX flash the image is cropped to 4480x4480px and the close distance and short flash duration provide just enough resolution that the compound eye structure is visible even for the flying insect.

Congratulations, a masterful shot! I was waiting for such a photo. Perfect sharpness, colors and composition. I tried to add motion blur to the photo from the stack, viewtopic.php?f=27&t=43693 Now we can see what it should look like. What were the parameters: aperture, shutter speed and do you more or less know how short the flash of Canon 1/1 is?

Thanks Pawel the settings for this shot were

f/13
1/250 sync
ISO 100

The flash was set to ETTL so I'm not sure of the exact timing but the Canon specs for the flash list the durations as below. I would imagine it was not at 1/1 though, more like 1/8 - 1/16 I think flash setting by ETTL is not saved saved in EXIF though.

Code: Select all

Flash Output	Firing Duration (Approx., sec.)
1/1 (Full)	1/1300
1/2	1/1900
1/4	1/3700
1/8	1/8700
1/16	1/13000
1/32	1/23000
1/64	1/34000
1/128	1/42000
1/256	1/58000
1/512	1/67000
