Bombylius ID, please?

Post by Pete »

I would like some help with this, please, but I keep getting a "Filesize exceeds limit" message.
The pixel size of my image is 1000 x 850, which should be OK.

Take a look at:
https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/ ... hp?p=10#10
First, make sure that your image dimensions are 1024 pixels or smaller, on both axes, AND that the image file length is 300 KB or smaller. Use your favorite photo editor to resize the image and set the JPEG compression quality as needed to meet those two rules

Can't tell for sure from this shot, but highly likely to be Bombylius major. Also known as dark-edged bee-fly due to the dark edges of the wings, this is by far the commonest species here in the UK.

You may have noticed the patterning on the wings. They are very active right now.

Another species, B discolor has dotted wings.

Thanks Mike, we have 3 different types on the pulmonaria flowers presently.
In addition to the Dark edged, there's a completely jet black furred, and a pale gold furred type that looks iridescent when the sun hits it.
