Proboscis or prey?

Does anyone have an idea whether this fly is munching on a tiny mite or the red thing is structure of its mouthparts.

My guess is prey, but it's tough to tell from the resolution that you posted.

Looks to me like a Red Velvet Mite (Trombidiidae)
