Some ants in Panama

Post by christerb »

Hi,

Here are some of the ants I saw in Panama.

Leaf cutters

Tiny something ants

Army ants

Solitary species, looked like something from a nightmare :)

These golden ones moved around in a small group.

Looks like some kind of trap-jaw ant. I found one with the head down in a hole sitting motionless. I had to touch it to see if it was alive, which it was - hunting behaviour?

Great shots what setup are you using to get this sort of magnification.

Very nice. Maybe the golden ones are Campanotus? But take that with a grain of salt, it is just my non-expert guess.

Thanks Lou, I think you are right. There is a species named C. sericeiventris which appear to be wide spread in Central America, so most likely that is what it is.

Nice images, the army ant is Eciton burchelli, the golden ant is indeed Camponotus sericeiventris, the spikey alien ant appears to be Acromyrmex (another type of leaf cutter) the shiny little ants may be a Pheidole. The trap jaw is Odontomachus.
