Critters from Itri, Italy

Post by Dalantech »

I went out to my sister in law's place in the mountains above Itri, Italy at 5:30AM to photograph the Bumblebees in her Lavender. There were several that were already awake and foraging in the 17C (62F) temperature. I wanted to take some lower magnification shots but there was too much Lavender junk in the foreground so I increased the mag to frame out distracting foreground elements. I have a few 2x photos that I'll use for a "learn from my fail" post.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F14, 1/100, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to about 3x) + a diffused MT26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1 FEC). These are single, uncropped, frames taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order. I used an artificial flower to keep the background from being black.

I went looking for something other than a bee and found a Crabronidae Wasp. Same problem as the bumblebee shots -had to dial up the mag to "crop out" some distracting foreground elements.

Bonus critter -one of the few 2x shots that I kept:
