Nikon Eclipse DIC PF and PA objective prism sliders

Post by pennine56 »

Hi folks

I have a Nikon Eclipse E800 with DIC, part of the system there when bought used and have built up. Universal C-CU condenser with the L, M and H condenser prisms (green series for dry top lens).

Just when I thought was understanding the Nikon Eclipse DIC systems :-k , the valuable doc link below (thank you Stephen Challener on Facebook Nikon Microscope Users Group) linked to gives the correct objective prism for each objective in the LMH condenser prism series.

All my objective prisms are in the PF series but for a number of objectives it recommends one in a PA series which was a type was unaware of.
Initially thought PA would be planapo and PF plan fluor but not always the case, see 10X below.

Summarising.

10X planapo uses PF10X, I have this combo'.
20X planfluor uses PF20X, I have this combo'
20X planapo uses PA20x, have the obj. but not that slider use the PF20X above
40X planapo dry with collar uses PA40X, have the obj. but use a PF40X
40X planfluor uses PF40, have the objective and the slider
100X uses the PA/PF100X, have both these

What is the difference between the PA and PF slider at a given mag. The PF does not seem to restrict the NA in back focal plane of the planapos.
The DIC to my reasonably DIC familiar eye (have DIC on my Photomic III) seems very similar for the 20X and 40X planapo and plan fluor pairs I have with the PF slider.

Cannot find the PA20X and PA40X mentioned with a Google search, the PF series more common.

Any insights and hands on experiences appreciated!

David

I have found the system to be surprisingly forgiving, with good results even on plan achromats. I also added an olympus w25xhr prism to the condenser (with a little modification) and it works well with the system, similar to the H prism.

There are some extremely hard to find parts for the former DIC Nikon system.
Definitely one of them are the PA20x and PA40x sliders. However I owned both of them (knowing how rare they are I even kept pictures of them).
They both work better with Plan Apos than PF sliders, giving better relief effect, especially with very 'flat' samples.

The problem is that chance of finding them equals to zero.

Thank you for the insights. Will be happy with the sliders that have as notice even the PF sliders are now much more expensive than when I bought them in 2019.
