Mitutoyo M Plan APO 20x 0.42 vs. Edmund Optics M Plan APO 20x 0.42

Post by quenoteam »

Hello

Has anyone had the chance to test the difference in optical quality of a lens like the original Mitutoyo M Plan APO 20x 0.42 compared to the one manufactured by Edmund Optics M Plan APO 20x 0.42?

Mitutoyo M Plan APO 20x 0.42:

Edmund Optics M Plan APO 20x 0.42:

I see that the features are very similar, but are they the same quality for extreme macro work?

Thanks for the feedback.

Shortlisted too: https://www.cupoty.com/micro-shortlist-03
(It produces great results)
This is the very last photo I took before disassembling my photomacrography setup to work from home.

I guess this doesn't answer the question. It's not as good compared to the Mitutoyo. Especially the corners, they are pretty bad. CA is a bit worse but central resolution is a bit better. Mine was used with the Thorlabs ITL200, my last copy of this tube lens is flying to its new owner and I don't have Mitutoyo objectives anymore, so I can't really make a comparison shot.

Hello,

One thing that stands out? The Edmund Optics M Plan APO 20x 0.42 field width spec is only 24mm and in my experience those numbers are usually very optimistic to put it in a nice way. The Mitutoyo will cover a larger image circle for sure.

Let us know if you find an EO 20X and test it.

Hope this helps.

Macro_Cosmos was right, the EO 20x is also sold by Motec and for $200 less.

I'm sure both are made in the same factory in China.

Correct, the EO 20x is a Motic 20x. Same with Oplenic's metallurgical apochromats and one more that escapes me. The quality is great, their engineer told me it's designed to be rigid as well, won't break easily. I own the EO 2x, 5x, 10x and 20x, I've used 50x and 100x. The 5x and 10x were actually better than Mitutoyo, corners are still worse but the centre was better in terms of both CA and resolution. 50x is worse with some odd LoCA, I've never compared the 100x.

I would assume the OEM selects the best copies for export, EO is a reputable company and they can't just allow bad quality control to tarnish their name. We may not like it, but it's an industry standard for OEMs.
