How to check the used microscope lenses

Post by Adalbert »

Hello everybody,
Does anybody know how to check the old, used lenses in the best way?
I have already started with the stack of a raster printed by the color laser printer:

Hi Adi,

if by "how to check" you mean "how to test", you can use the target you like/have at hand, the laser printed paper you used is a good target. The thing is that in order to make sure that objective performs flawless, you'd have to know how it should perform. Especially with delicate optics like the Mittys. Some old optics like finite Nikon objectives are bomb-proof made, if optics are good, objective will perform flawless in 99,9% of cases.

If you are not familiar with that particular objective, the result may seem good enough to you, but you won't be 100% sure unless you have something to compare it with.

In this case, it's obvious that given the damage, objective will not perform at its best. In order to know how much worse it performs, you would have to make a comparison with a good copy of the same objective.

Is this image edited or SOOC? The Mitty 20 I had with spotted internal element showed lower contrast, but resolution was good, a tad lesser than optimal, but nothing significant.

Best,

Hello Macrero,
Unfortunately I don’t have any second Mitty 20X :-(
I only could compare it with the NIKON LU Plan 20x.

Yes, this picture has been modified as all my stacks.

The SOOC version looks like follows (but its sharpness is set to 0,
because I usually convert the RAW into the TIFF in this way
and increase the sharpness as soon as the picture has been stacked completely)

Hi Adi,

the weevil shots in your other thread are very good, but looking at this test stack in hi-res, it seems that damage impacts quality quite a bit. Image is hazy and resolution is not optimal.

Have you made a comparison with the LU Plan 20?
