Epi-illuminator assistance please

Post by Olympusman »

I recently lucked into an ebay sale of a trinocular head with an epi-illuminator for $170. It's in pretty good shape, but I would like to have the model designation for the lamp.
Here is the rig.

Here is the illuminator. All of the flanges are 44mm.

The lamp holder.

I didn't notice that loose screw until I saw the photo.

Here's the lamp. The sockets in the lamp holder are 6mm apart.

If anybody can get me a model number for the lamp it would be appreciated.

Mike,

Not sure if this is the original specification bulb for the illuminator, but try a Google search for G4 12v 20w bulb. This will give you a lot of options to try, as they are used in many low voltage kitchen lighting systems. High temperature versions are used is ovens.

The basic kitchen bulbs are very cheap, so are worth a try. They seem to start at about 33 pence over here, so I guess that is about 50 cents where you are.

There's a pretty comprehensive list of bulbs used by Olympus here:

http://www.alanwood.net/downloads/olymp ... atalog.pdf

Doesn't show any 12v 20watt however. There is a 6V 20W (8-C405) that was used in some "axial" illuminators, and a 12V 50W used in some other hardware.

What are the power supply specs? (I/m not familiar with this model illuminator... does it have any markings?)

Illuminator

Post by Olympusman »

No markings. The seller described it as a DWR-8B. I just checked something. I have an Amscope metallurgical scope, and the construction is the same as my "new" illuminator. I'll give them a call.
Thanks, guys.

A little out of topic, but I think you should probably consider an upgrade to LED. A 3W or 5W star LED would give at least as much light as a 20W halogen, and the casing of the illuminator is big enough to contain a heatsink.

Bulb

Post by Olympusman »

Amscope lists all of their lamps at http://www.amscope.com/accessories/bulb.html
but still no model number. I can always buy from them, but I could probably find it cheaper elsewhere on line. We have a store nearby called Batteries and Bulbs, so I think I'll run it past them as well.
Really not interested in LED illumination. This is my phase contrast scope which I use rarely and don't want to put too much effort into it. Thanks anyway.

Bulb

I took the bulb down to Batteries + Bulbs and found it is a generic model. The pin type is G4. $3.99 a bulb.
