New OFN spec objective marking info

Post by RobertOToole »

There is new a new OFN marking that is now required on plan objectives starting in 2014. I had never seen this term before so when I was looking into picking up a new 4X0.2 APO objective I wanted to find out exactly what it designated. This simple information took way too much time to find so hopefully this post will save people lots of time in the future.

The Olympus and the Nikon microscope site were useless for info on OFN markings BTW. I found the info first on the ISO.org site than it took a couple of weeks for Nikon to finally confirm via email. At first the tech people that were helping me at Nikon were clueless about the new OFN marking. They had to walk out into the warehouse and actually pull stock to check it.

This is a Nikon Objective with the new OFN marking below. This is a newer CFI Plan APO 4X with 20mm WD.

OFN: Objective Field Number
Maximum field of view number of the eyepiece for which the objective is designed to be used.

The new ISO requirement indicates that objective lenses named Plan or with Plan as part of the name in the markings shall also indicate the objective field number on the body of the lens. The indication of the objective field does not apply to objective lenses sold before the year 2014.

Note: The objective in the image is newer but not the current version the CFI Plan APO Lambda 4X. The current has the Nano Crystal coating and is part of the new Lambda series.

Hope this helps someone.

Robert

Thanks, Robert! This is good information to get into the record. Even if this thread gets few comments, I wouldn't be surprised if it is referenced many times.

Thanx Robert!

Just wondering, since I have the "original" 4x NA 0.2: do you know if there is any difference in image quality between this version and the new version that has the nano crystal coating?

Hi Niels,

I have thought about that before and I am sure lots of others have also. It would be interesting to see a comparison although I sure they are both excellent.

I would be great if Mark Goodman could find time to test a new version against the older version he tested here, in case you haven't seen the test on his site:

He contributes here time to time and is a good guy, always really helpful and knowledgable.

Robert
