Switching between filter positions is accomplished by gently pulling the black cylinder out to the second position... The lubricant may be a bit dry so the tug may initially be a bit stiff.
By loosening the forward-facing thumbscrew the whole component holding the filters comes away. Pulling out the 18 mm. circular colored filters is done by pinching the two tabs on the black plastic retaining rings and the 45 degree colored dichroic mirror is accessed by unscrewing the diagonally-split "halves" of the block itself which can then be replaced in one position by a semi-silvered 50/50 dichroic mirror available from Chroma Technology or Omega Filters.

Specify the older Zeiss Standard microscope IV-FL fluorescence vertical illuminator and they'll supply the right dichroic.
Both firms can supply semi-silvered mirrors and quality polarizers in different beamsplit ratios and sizes that might prove handy for those building rigs and coaxial lighting set-ups.
If you should ever wish to return this fluorescence vertical illuminator to it's original stock configuration be sure to make a note of which filter goes where, as well as it's correct orientation toward the illumination source, as this is crucial to correct function in fluorescence. Resist the temptation to clean these as well, since the coatings, if they're still intact, are exceedingly delicate and are not intended to be touched by anything.
