It's not a bad system ... I have been working with one of the alternatives this year - SatScan Collections but SmartDrive :)

I wouldn't turn one down if it magically showed up at my door step!

I see that they want about $15,000 US dollars, possibly including camera and lenses.

If they'd let me use my own camera and lenses and PC, perhaps bring the price down to about $8-10,000 (roughly). I could be misunderstanding the pricing, of course.

The telecentric optics add-on for a 100mm or MPE-65 lens is certainly interesting. I wonder what it consists of and what its specs are?

Here's a DIY GIgapan system:

Not sure if it provides all the bells and whistles of the commercial system!

Phil,

Gene Cooper is a member on the forum and we did discuss this device and various components. I haven't time at the moment; but a forum search for 'Gigapan' or 'telecentric' should provide a trail. I don't think there is any deep mystery with regard to the telecentric arrangement. It is a diopter positioned at a distance equal to it's focal length from the entrance pupil of the relay lens. Please correct me if I am wrong :)

Like probably half the universe, I have a redundant flatbed scanner. Somebody somehwere must have converted one of those to do stitching.
???

That begs the question: suppose you could change the lens in a scanner to focus well away from the glass - or do some of them do that already?

You need to convert it into a ... HerbScan :D Then flog it for a small fortune to a herbarium for scanning their pressed specimens ;)

I have seen these in action and they're a ridiculously simple piece of kit - turn a scanner upside down and mount it in a frame, then provide a simple table underneath that you put specimens on and then an arm that moves the table up to meet the scanner. Works a treat, or so I'm told - and the resulting images are almost as good as the real thing :)
