Olympus NC Splan Apo 100x

Post by Simon W »

Hi, can anyone tell me the advantages of this no coverslip objective over the 'usual, run of the mill' Splan Apo 100X? The idea of being able to avoid using a coverslip at such magnifications appeals. Here's one for sale, there are a few others around too:

Wouldn't want to spend that kind of $'s if it's not worth it or restricts use.

thanks

Simon

Biological NC or NCS (no cover slip) objectives are for fairly specialized use with blood smears or other thin cell "smears" (genetics labs). I really can't think of too many other appropriate (biological, transmitted light) subjects.

In materials science and with metallurgical microscopes it is a different story. There are many flat subjects and epi-illumination is the norm, as are objectives designed to be used with no cover glass..
