Nikon BD Plan 20/0.4 vs. BD Plan 20/0.4ELWD quick comparison

Post by eurythyrea »

I've spoke about the optical differences of these two objectives with some people from this forum. So decided to take a simple comparison. The subject was a European Peacock. As it is an overwintering specimen, its wing was full of small dirt, but it shows well the possibility of CA. For the simplicity I will show the two stacks in their original resolution. They are not edited after the stacking process, so straight from Zerene. Sorry, that I was lazy to make side-by-side images of 100% crops, though I hope you will find it useful. Both were taken under the same conditions at 20x mag on full frame, the only difference was the working distance. Click on each one to see the original stack (more than 9MB)!

Thank you very much for this test Nikola
It seems to me that the BD 20/0.40 has red CAs (easy to correct from RAWs before stacking) but the ELWD version has those blueish CAs that are not that easy to fix. Also the ELWD produces more halos
This is similar to what I found in using the 40/0.50 ELWD against the 40/0.65; the 40/0.65 gives less halos and CAs are better fixed. In this case also the 40/0.65 has higher resolution because of higher NA
I also see the 20/0.40 image has better contrast (or just different) but this maight be caused because of the post procesing
Anyway, I think my quest for a 20 ELWD has come to an end
By the way; I did the crops for you, hope you do not mind ( and I am lazy too)

Javier, thank you for the plus work! It seems I'm much lazy than you
The better contrast for the regular BD 20x may come from the shorter working distance I think. Btw they are very similar in the results, the much times higher price for the ELWD version gives not as much pros as its price. But there could be some cases it would be better to use.... Oough, I hope it's understandable :?

Nikola
