This is one of the moths that my 10 year old daughter brought on from caterpillars she was given. The wingspan is approx 13 cm. The 1st shot is a macro using my Canon Powershot G9. The whole eyespot is using a Wild M8 microscope with Canon Powershot S50 camera. The other two shots are using a Zeiss Standard 16 microscope with Canon Powershot S50. Objectives Zeiss 10/0.22 plan achromat and Leitz 20/0.3 EF L (long working distance). All the photomicrographs are stacks using Zerene Stacker and were taken using oblique surface illumination.

The eyespots are transparent and in the higher mag photomicrographs you can see some of the scales on the other side of the wing through the transparent membrane of the eyespot.

Though we lean upon the same balustrade, the colours of the mountain are different.

Very nice.

These "powers of ten" sets always have a lot of impact for me, and the oblique lighting of this one does a particularly good job of highlighting the surface texture of the scales and the membrane.
