Sphagnum cf. russowii

Post by ralfwagner »

Hello,

Sphagum is difficult to identificate. Beneath the aspect of the branch-leafs the shape of the stem-leafs is of importance. I'd like to show here the difference between these two sorts of leafs that can be found with Spaghnum. But first a picture of the habitus:

Image

The branch-leaf shows a lancet like shape and the ratio of lenght to width is 2,9.

The stem-leaf is tongue shaped. The cuspid is roundish and the borders are smooth.

Next time I'll show some more criteria on how to id a Sphagnum.

Those are some nice crisp black and whites there Ralf, they remind me a lot of an amoeba test. :D I used to look at the leaves of moss quite a bit using the scope but for some reason, I haven’t in a while. Maybe I should. :-k
