Image
Microscope: Zeiss Standard 16
Ocular: Zarf G9 Photo-adapter
Objective: Leitz 40/0.7 NPL Fluotar ICT
Substage: Leitz 0.9 Achr P ICT
Flash: Vivitar 283
Camera: Canon Powershot G9
F4.8, ISO100

This is a selection of shots of the same organism. Identity would be most welcome. Reminds me of Litonotus, but...

Sample from Warnham LNR, Horsham, UK, Nov 2008

Though we lean upon the same balustrade, the colours of the mountain are different.

Hi Graham,

These are, indeed, images of a Litonotus species. They show injuries to both anterior and posterior ends of the cell (possibly incurred from pipetting the sample). Despite apparently severe injuries these cells often remain motile for quite some time. The micronucleus is nicely shown nestled between the two macronuclear nodules.

All the best,

Bill
