Collotheca Sp. radiating cilia

Post by Bschnitzer »

I think this is Ornata species, but I could be wrong. It caught my attention due to the length of the cilia. I observed it capture a very small (2 μm) bright white ciliate and a small (6 μm) bdelloid R, though they weren't so much captured, rather they performed a suicidal dive directly into the C's mouth without being channeled by the extended cilia. Occasionally, the C would quickly retract by coiling the narrow anterior end like Vorticella. Fascinating to watch it unfurl the cilia which appear very flexible until they reach the extent in the image when they appear very stiff. Neat trick.

This image is contrast tweaked to accentuate the cilia.

Regards,

Bob

Nice images of interesting critters, although you have something wrong with the measurements: nm means nanometer and they would be invisible with optical microscopy, maybe you meant micrometer μm ?
