Hi everyone,
this morning, before cooking for Christmas lunch, I tried to experiment with a 3D light system very different from those commonly used: the main innovation is a crystal dome placed between the light source and the condenser. I share with you my first result ... I hope to be able to get even better results.

P.S. Microscope is an old black enamel Leitz SM equipped with Berek condenser e Leitz Apo objectives. Lighting system is a home-made led source...

Very nice image, do you have a comparison photo taken with your 'normal' transmitted-light setup ?

Hi David,
unfortunately I haven't a comparison image in normal brightfield, but I well remember that the ciliate was almost invisible, diaphanous and transparent like a ghost!
In the next few days, I hope to take off the chef's apron and put on the lab coat. Only then will I be able to make comparison images :-)

You are right, John...I have used a bombastic name to indicate a simple hemisphere glass, easily available (ebay, Amazon...)

I used colimating lens, not hemisphere (got this DIC'ish effect) .
Found it useful mixing with other illumination types.
Rotation/displacing helps a lot (if you have enough room between condenser holder and illuminator) .

your setup is a lot more "conscious" than mine
I randomly played with a glass hemisphere, while you built an excellent system with predictable results.
I will try to get spikes from your system ... unfortunately my Berek condenser is very different from your because the first lens in the optical path is a field lens!
Anyway, in the specific section I just shared a photo taken a couple of days ago with my system ...

Very interesting image - it appears the Dome is forming a type of Oblique lighting. I have never seen this type of Dome used before.
The dome creates a DIC like effect.
I found some for $5.99 on Ali Express for those that might want to try a crystal dome.
