Very nice! I think I have a similar diatom, it was found in an NBS strew slide, antique. Looks nice under phase contrast. :lol:

What's COL? POL is polarised light, is COL+POL simply referring to cross polarisation?

COL stands for Circular Oblique Lighting, see link: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/ind ... jcol2.html

René van Wezel in the link in the first post that details the technique (see figure 9) refers to it as Annular illumination

COL+POL combines both illumination techniques at the same time.
