Euglenoids

Post by Olympusman »

Our landscaping contactor told me she has a fish pond in her yard, but it is "green" at the moment. I went to get some samples and it was green, as if there was a mist in the water. It looked like cyanobacteria and sure enough it was. The sample was devoid of most forms of life, such as ostracods, copepods, daphnia and rotifers, a few desmids appeared and almost no algae - even the ubiquitous spirogyra. What did remain was euglenoids.
It's interesting what species survive in a pond teeming with cyanobacteria. In one pond it was Micrasterias furcata, in another Volvov and in another diatoms.
