First trials with flash, pondlife

Hello everybody,

at the moment I am trying to photograph pictures with flash.
The layer thickness is still quite high, so as not to restrict the natural movement of the ciliates.

Here are some quick images of my flash adaption:
It s the well known mirror system, with a "semipermeable" mirror.
A specialist built this very kindly for me. I can use it on my Vanox and on my Zeiss Universal, it fits to both.

Hi Anne I have been testing different flash setups on my Axioscope, using beam splitter and Nikon 800 flash unit. I have been trying to get the shutter speed higher then 1\4000 of second but so far 1\8000 of second best I could do using ISO 1600 with a Nikon D500 - I can achieve the same exposure using my tungsten light. I am going to have to work on this more - I want be able to stop some of the very fast protozoans e.g. Halteria/

Would you please tell me more about the semi-permeable mirror that is used in your setup? I know absolutely nothing abut them. Also a possible source to purchase one, meaning the mirror. I'd like to build one of these setups myself. If anyone else knows, plus jump in here with some specifics and a source.

Robert, if I understand well you are setting the flash to high speed mode to use camera shutter high speed. If so this is the wrong way: be aware that this mode provides low flash power long pulse while in normal mode the actual exposure time is due to the very short flash pulse and at reduced flash power the pulse is really short, take a look at the two first links at my flash thread http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... 563#161563
"high speed" mode is useful for daylight flash filling but has little sense in this case at least if you can dim down the continuous light source

JW, almost for sure she is referring to a plate beamsplitter, also known as half mirror.

With this terms you'll find some of the for sale online.
For this application I use a prism beamsplitter from SurplusSed
