Been struggling with this for a couple of days now. Can't seem to get what I want. Any actual imaging tricks are more than welcome.

Getting there. Polariser and/or a blue filter might reduce the flares around the edge somewhat. You can probably afford to reduce the brightness a bit too (shorter exposure or dimmer light) which might also help.

Best might be to try shooting brightfield and invert to negative in post. That will avoid the flaring problems for sure. Radiolarians are very optically active.

Thanks ... I suppose where I'm frustrated is the image looks more like a charcoal pencil sketch from my perspective.

Have you tried the technique of using diffused darkfield illumination, sent in from the sides instead of up through a condenser?

Thanks ... I actually saw all of those original posting but didn't read the newer postings of the technique used. I was even discussing that with Curt a couple weeks ago when I saw one of sushidelic postings. I thought they were epi-DF which I haven't experimented with yet.
