Freshwater bryozoan

Post by Charles Krebs »

I was dragging my small plankton net through some light vegetation in one of my favorite fresh-water marshy areas. I thought I had dragged in a small rock, but on examination is was a bryozoan colony about half the size of a golf ball. WOW... what an overwhelming subject to work with! Tricky though. It's real beauty is seen when it is "unconstrained" and moving freely. So far I have only tried shooting with the entire "blob" placed in a small container on the stage, and illuminated (mostly) from above using electronic flash. Stacking is not really an option... constant movement, so DOF is a real challenge. But it can lend itself to some attractive shots if you try to use the in-focus pieces to emphasize the the graceful lines of this subject.

Beautiful!!! Stunning, etc. I'm pretty much out of other words here :D .

I found a couple of Bryozoans only once. I managed to keep them alive for a week or so under my stereo scope. I never did photograph them, but found them absolutely fascinating to watch.

Thanks,
Nothing special here at all. I tried to get "fancy" and played around with some different lighting set-ups, but ultimately the best results were when I simply pointed a direst flash at about 45 degrees onto the subject from a few inches away. The background is just the "blob" under all of the individual zooids.
