Gah, it's so frustrating.. I can find waterbears just about any time I want, but in all these years I've never found an amoeba. Just once in my life I'd like to see one in the flesh, as it were.

it is rather impossible not to stumble across amoebae. Take a water sample from a pond, river or ditch, together with some detritus and put it in a petri dish, add a corn of rice or wheat and keep at a north facing window, not too hot. Leave it alone for a couple of days.

Then fire up your DIC, Phase or oblique lightning and bingo, amoebae.
