Some Zinfandel for the New Year

Post by leonardturner »

I found these crystals recently in a rather new (2012) bottle of Zinfandel. They are apparently a result of the tartaric acid involved in wine production, different from the "dregs" of a 10 year old wine. In any event, they were colorful and seemed a good excuse to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Beautiful! Happy new year to you and everyone in this forum as well!

How was this photo shot? With a macro rig (objective adapted onto camera lens and macro focus rail), or on a microscope using 2x/4x objective and reflected light?

Thank you all very much. zzffnn, it was my old Labophot with the 4X, lit with LED lights diffused through my favorite diffuser, coffee filters. Stackshot drove the focus stack through a flexible drive similar to the one Rik has described in the past. The actual crystal is quite 3-dimensional, with the plateau shown in focus standing rather tall above the background out of focus "base."
