I would like to start photographing some crystals - but it is a totally new field to me.

I do not have a microscope, but can get down to about 20x with my Nikon 10x plan achro in front of my canon 100-400 set at 400.

What common household ingredienta make suitable subject, and please let me have any tips !

Answering your question: sugar, citric acid, saltpetre, various pharmaceuiticals, etc. The best way is try various substances. Some of them are birefringent and others not.

By the way, I assume you have the infinitive 10 X objective ? In this case you should set focal length dependly on your microscope objective. It can be, for example, 170 mm or 200 mm. 400 mm focal length is too long and it usually causes worse optical correction. The exact distance depends on kind of microscope objective. If it is metalurgical one you should check "f" value often engraved on the barrel. It should be for example 180 mm or 210 mm (these values occur the most often). So you should set focal length of your lens around 180 or 210 mm for optimal correction. Your 100 - 400 mm lens simply acts as a tube lens in the microscope corrected to the infinity.
