Thank you, Chris. I know this publication! You, re right, the authors might be interested in the imaging technique I used; I don't recall seeing many confocal microscope images of jumping spider's eyes out there, so perhaps I can offer something of value for the folks in that business :)

I think what looks like an optic nerve is actually a trachea - probably nerves are following it in close proximity, that's often a case in inverts. You may see bits and pieces of image-processing neuropil in the two images tho!

yes, 7% agarose works surprisingly well even when sectioning very thick cuticle - I'll post images of cross-sections through a Dytiscus diving beetle front tarsus soon, they make good case in point.
