The love rotifer

Post by RogelioMoreno »

I went to Gamboa lake for some samples and found some rotifer colony and a lone rotifer, they look the same species the one that won NSW 2014. Seems that they know about the rotifer that won because the lone rotifer and one of the member of the colony pose (something that is not common) for the pictures.

The solitary rotifer:

Just spectacular. These were sandwiched between 2 coverslips?

David, good question. I normally pick up the specimen from a preti dish and put them in other petri dish with clean water, when I was inspecting the petri dish with clean water I did notice that the solitary rotifer was looking for food at the bottom of the petri dish with the corona almost facing the bottom, I quickly moved it to a clean coverslip (I use coverslip as slide) and did not cover it (to avoid altering its behavior), after a while the rotifer did start to face the corona to the bottom (to my 20x objective), to take the picture I did chase the rotifer because it was moving. Pictures #2 and #3 were sandwiched between 2 coverslips.
