Sometimes these rotifers die with their tails straight and at other times they are at right angles. I use a 50% solution of glutaraldehyde of one drop to one drop of pond water and stirred with a teasing needle before putting the cover slip on.
My other solution is saturated cupric acetate.
For those of you who want to dip into your medicine cabinet, try Neosynephrine, Magnesium sulfate (Epsom Salts), and Vodka.

I haven't tried cupric acetate, but will now. Thanks for that.

In searching for more info after reading your post, I came across this useful article. It has a table at the end listing various organisms cross-referenced with relevant narcotizing, killing/fixing and preserving agents for them.
