Chlorophyll autofluorescence with Batrachospermum turfosum

Hello,

recently I came back to a pond in which you can find the red algae Batrachospermum turfosum. Batrachospermum is called also the frog spawn algae because of its gelatinous appearance.
It is my experience, that the chlorophyll autofluorescence can be observed very good with red algae and diatoms, too. Maybe this is because of their different chlorophyll compostion, I don't really know.

Indeed this is a very rare species here in Germany and probably in Canada, too. You can find it in swampy heathland ponds growing on sunken trees, branches or poles.

I have noticed that, too. Maybe this is because there is no chlorophyll b which somewhat blurs the image.
