Life stages of Volvox

Post by Olympusman »

My latest pond dip is very rich with Volvox, so I was able to compile some shots of the various life stages.
Volvox with immature daughter cells.

Detail of daughter cells.

When the daughter cells mature the colony dies and erupts, freeing the daughter cells.

The daughter cell then matures into a new colony.

Exellent and instructive series!
To have a Volvox rich sample will be really nice!
(but I think that what you name "daughter cells" are in fact daughter colonies)

Thanks, guys.
FYI - if you want to stop Volvox or Eudorina from tumbling for photography, use Cupric acetate or Glutaraldehyde.
