Euglena

Post by billporter1456 »

Here are some Euglena from my local pond. I was surprised to see one of them discard its flagellum.

Good catch!

Google search on euglena discard flagellum finds lots of descriptions of the process, but I wouldn't have known to go looking for that until somebody told me they had seen it happen.

Thanks Rik and microthings, your comments are appreciated. From what I have recently read, the discarding of the flagellum is a normal precursor to entering that dormant or cyst state.

Thanks, Rogelio! I just posted a followup video that shows what happened to that Euglena cyst when the water evaporated.
