Not a nice photo, but this gives you an idea of how long the thread of a mushroom mesenterial filament nematocyst is when triggered.

Gorgeous!

(Some of these nematocysts are huge compared to the ones I most commonly see on fresh water hydra)

Thanks Charles. The Mushroom mesenterial filament nematocysts are the biggest I have ever seen in my aquarium.

These are jaw-droppingly good!

Do you happen to have a link where I could read more about these things? I gather these are related to the ones you showed earlier at http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... hp?t=19181, but I'm unclear what a "mushroom polyp" is.

Thanks everyone. I hope to add photos of a Jellyfish's nematocysts soon. Just awaiting a sample tentacle.

These are indeed related - but only the ones marked as Mushroom nematocyst. A mushroom polyp is a kind of marine cnidarian, part of the order Corallimorpharia. Here is a very short article.

A mushroom can attack nearby coral to compete for space on a reef by expelling its mesenterial filaments (which naturally it also uses to digest food with). These filaments contain the small and large nematocysts.

Uh oh. Now I have to resist the urge to fix and microtome one of my corallinamorphs....and I've spent a lot of effort raising them so now they are finally starting to propagate. But I REALLY want to see what they look like fixed and stained. Great, no fantastic shots. What species did you use? And I am assuming you just cut/squashed these and put them under the 60/1.2W. Must....resist...urge... to...microtome....corallinamorphs...
