I think, this is a Micrasterias, probably M. furcata.

Iwent by Desmids of the United States by Wolle Plate XLV

Hello Michael,

I was looking in your book:Wolle (published 1884 in Bethlehen). The whole plate XLV is about Staurastrum.

I printed out Desmids by Wolle and plate XLV. The plate contains Micrasterias, Cylindrocystis and Xanthidium but no Staurastrum. The facing plate references page 38, but the actual text is on page 41, which incorrect reference I have found common in Wolle.

OK, I'm confused. The link provided by Franz clearly shows plate XLV and the accompanying list of Staurastrum names references pages 138 through 143, nothing about page 38 at all.

Are there two quite different versions of "Desmids of the United States by Wolle"?

I think this is a simple misreading of the numbers on the plate.
8, 5 and 3 are identically seen, due to the low scan resolution.
I think Michael means #5 for his identification, this is M. americana.

Please remember, the old taxonomists always tried to find accurate Latin or Greece words to describe a new genus:
Cylindrocystis : Gr. kylindros, cylinder + Gr. kystis, bladder.
Micrasterias : Gr mikros, small + aster, star.
So, Michael, if you look at your Photograph, this is not a cylindric bladder,
this is a small star.

If it is figure 5 on the plate inquestion, then it is Micrasterias crux melitensis.

Micrasterias americana from plate XXXVI is characterized by the small "horns" projecting forwards and backwards on the two ends illustrated on plate XXXVI figures 2 and 5.
