old broken specimen which I have kept for about 15 years; I like coming back to it, it reveals so many effects on and on...

This effect is a result of cracks and strains of medium inside broken specimen.

Hi, Johan,

To elaborate a bit on the previous answer, if you jigger your DIC settings a bit you can get interference colours in your specimen, and effect called optical staining. It isn't very widely used but can lead to spectacular results in otherwise colourless specimens as Litonotus has shown.
