Francisco,
interesting clip! Are you sure, that the diatom was still alive when escaping - or was it the ameba which expelled the shell afte digesting the plasma?

Hello Ernst
On the "tear" produced in the amoeba think, without security, the diatom escapes

Hallo Francisco,
I cannot imagine, that a diatom could perform such a jump out of the ameba. So I tend to stay on my theory of an expelling by the ameba. Aditionally the ameba shows a rather good repair condition in the last seconds of the clip.

Hello Ernst
I think you're right.
I have researched a little, Albert Westphal in his book "Special Zoology. Protozoa" states: "In the rhizopods defecation may occur cell surface ............. The vacuole, emigrated to the film, breaks and empty its contents "
thanks
Francisco
