Aquatic Louse

Post by Olympusman »

This is the last sample from the spring-fed cistern. In terms of diversity it was somewhat of a disappointment, but I did encounter specimens I had never seen before. One thing I have found is that if there is Duckweed on the surface of the water, the biodiversity will be very low.
Aquatic Louse Asellus aquaticus

This first specimen had a body length of about 12mm. Some of the larger ones in my dip were about 20mm.

This guy only wanted to bump against the edge of the dish instead of staying in the center. I tried carbon dioxide with seltzer water to slow it down but there were too many bubbles in the background for photography. Vodka finally slowed it down.

This one was about 1.5mm.

Thanks guys.
Since i have so much time on my hands I have been experimenting with lighting techniques and narcotizing. I usually keep a bottle of 10% grain alcohol on my bench for the small stuff, but something this large calls for a martini.
