I have just started a new planted tropical aquarium. The CO2 injection seems to fuel a huge growth in bacteria on the surface. A thin layer can be seen - not unlike the carbon monoxide layer one sometimes see on puddles in the road.
But there are so many... This is at 40x. They cover the cyanobacteria behind them. They are most likely a different species to the kind you normally find on epithelial cells in your mouth - at least, they are much smaller. Not sure how the morphology of bacteria functions.
