two Acanthareans and a Copepod

Post by Franz Neidl »

These are two Acanthareans ("Radiolaria") and a rather big Copepod.
"Acantharean spicules are unique in consisting of strontium sulphate (celestite), together with high concentrations of barium and other trace elements. The skeleton dissolves rapidly in sea water after the cell's Death, and thus does not fossilise" (Larink&Westheide: Coastal Plankton, München 2006, p.38

2 pictures, objective 4x, brightfield, seawater

Very nice! I've never heard of those Acanthariens. An alga?
