Hi Litonotus,
interesting shots! I observe those crystals, sometimes in Daphnia and other Crustacea, even in the Amano-garneles, now for several years. Last year I got information from a lab that the crystals consist of calcium carbonate. But it's still unknown why and how they come to the animals' carapaxes.

Ernst, thanks for precise information (: it is strange that they does not kill them, I remember Rogelio's image where whole daphnia's body was covered by those crystals (:
