The first image is exported from lightroom, with heaviest sharpening for screen. I'll add a photoshop version with smart sharpening. Just to see what works best. Perhaps I should try Topaz.
Regarding your sharpening in Lightroom - not sure how you do it but I found I get very good results with the sharpen option in the develop module, and setting amount to 50 / 70 depending on magnification, radius to 1.5 - 3 depending on magnification as well, and masking to 50 - 80 depending on the amount of noise suppression.
I always leave output sharpening at normal values.
I usually do the sharpening afterwards depending on the type of use. a 1024 pix version for the web can have quite some sharpness but when you sharpen a big picture too much the result is often not so nice.
I try to sharpen for 13 x 19" prints I make, so the screen is always secondary. But I agree, I prefer an under sharpened image to an over sharpened one.
