My kid found this piece of pink algae floating in the ocean on Sunday near Stanley Park. Nothing much to look at with the naked eye but under fluorescence it really shines. Reminds me of an X-Ray.

Wow. Fluorescence (UV especially!) can lead to some gorgeous imagery =)
Didn't realise calcareous things fluoresce yellow. Would look extra pretty with some arthropods nearby -- those shine blue!

PS: If you sneak onto one of the yacht club floating docks off Stanley Park, there are some stunning critters there, like sponges, anemones and tunicates, since the dock never leaves water. Those host quite a garden of microbial life on them. For extra fun, try to find some choanoflagellates, and then sponge choanocytes to compare them to.

I do not think these are calcareous... At least not from what I saw under the microscope but I could be mistaken.

When you say arthropods shine blue - you mean similar to DAPI?
