I have found two distinct types of nuisance algae growing in my daughter's tropical aquarium (fresh water). The first kind grows not longer than about 8mm in length, and grows in perpendicular filaments on the leaves of the aquarium plants. Looks like a brush... Lets call this algae A.

The second type grows in very long filamentous strands, forming large mats. Call this algae B. With the eye they look identical, but needless to say under the microscope it is clear they are not the same. Since I really like to get rid of them as they suffocate the plants, it is imperative I get a proper ID. Please can someone help me?

I can not help you with the ID, but they are great photos. Especially in polarized light

Very nice, images. The type A filament is definitely the genus Oedogonium and the last image of this set demonstrates a germling of Oedogonium. The type B green alga is probably the genus Klebsormidium.
Hope this helps, Don

Oedogonium

I'm quite sure that both algae are genera Oedogonium, but probably different species.
